Find Your Formula..
If you want... A Barely There Feel
Look for... A Foam, such as Revlon PhotoReady Airbrush Mousse Makeup ($14, drugstores) or Liquid foundation like, Estee Lauder Invisible Fluid Makeup ($35, EsteeLauder.com)
These Ultra-light, water-based formulas go on super-sheer, so they're ideal for days when you don't need a ton of coverage. To achieve a second-skin effect, smooth on with a damp makeup sponge instead of fingertips or a brush.
If you want... Anti-Aging Benefits
Look for... Formula infused with wrinkle-fighting of firming ingredients. They won't provide the same results that a true anti-aging serum or cream can, but they do help, Giorgio Armani Designer Lift Smoothing Firming Foundation ($65, saks.com) creates a meshlike web over skin that gives a temporary lift. or L'Oreal Paris Visable Lift Smooth Absolute ($16, drugstores), with retinol, collagen, and elastin, helps plump fine lines.
If you want... Help With Breakouts
Look for... Foundations laced with blemish-blasting ingredients like salicylic acid. Don't expect them to replace your regular acne cream (they're less potent), but because they have similar ingredients, Clinique Acne Solutions Liquid Makeup ($25, Clinique.com) or Almay Clear Complexion Makeup ($14, drugstores)If you want... A Base that works overtime
Look for... A long-wearing formula. Most foundations stay put for hours, but these are designed to last all day -and then some- thanks to a blend of silicones and water-resistant polymers that help adhere the formula to the skin, Rimmel London Lasting Finish 25-hour Foundation ($7, drugstores) or Lancome Teint Idole Ultra 24hour ($44, lancome-use.com)
If you want... A Radiance Boost
Look for... A brightening foundation, some formulas, like Yves Saint Laurent Teint Radiance ($48, yslbeautyus.com), boast micas or other light-reflecting minerals, which will give your complexion an instant glow, others, such as Covergirl + Olay Tone Rehab 2 in 1 Foundation ($14, drugstores), contain ingredients like niacinamide and glucosamine to help lighten discoloration and even skin over time.
If you want... Major Coverage
Look for... A creamy compact foundation. From broken capillaries to pesky brown blotches, we all have something we'd like to hide. Thee bases are thicker and more densely pigmented than liquids, so it will take less to cover more. We like Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua Fresh Hydrating Cream Compact Makeup (out in April $58, chanel.com) and Neutrogena Healthy Skin Compact Foundation ($14, drugstores).
